The first International Open competion to be organised by British Veterans' Fencing took place at Guildford on 4/5th January.

BVF hosted the EVF circuit event for Epee at the Guildford Spectrum on 4 th January 2020.

This was part of a Veterans International Open 6 weapon event which was also be a BVF selection event.

A number of club members entered and some won medals.

The epee was fenced in age groups - The older fencers, including Andrew Brown fenced early on Saturday. He won his first DE fight against   a FIN  10/3 but went out to Bill Osbaldeston 10/4.  Andrew came 5th.

In the younger age group, Cat 3 Jon Nottingham (visitor to the club) was 7th and  Andrew Luckman 16th (from 41 fencers).

In Cat 2 a formidable international group of 61 fencers included Jean-Luc Janet and John Prime. Both won 3 fights  in the poules giving a ranking of 28 & 33 respectively.

Unfortunately J-L had Keith Barnet in his first DE fight and lost 10/3. John however beat Adam Bonner 10/6 and went on to beat number one seed Thierry Fremalle from Belgium also 10/6.

John went on to beat 8th seed Yves Le Corre (FRA) 10/5 losing only to the silver medalist Eric Grand D'Hautville from Switzerland 10/5. This gave John a bronze medal - an excellent result in such a strong field.

In the women's Sabre Silvia Brown was in a group of Cat 3 & 4 and won all but one in the poule. In her first DE in her cat 4 age group she beat Maggie Myers 10/1. Next she was up against Marie -Chantal Demaille from France (who hed defeated her when last they met at the final of the World Championships in 2018).   In an exciting semi final bout Silvia closed out at 10-7. Fencing the final soon after she lost to Viv Frith 10/7 taking silver medal.

Adrian Griffin was one of 21 in a combined Cat 1 & 2 foil. In a tough poule he lost only to Mike McKay giving him 2nd seeding.  He then had a bye to the last 8. His then won his first DE, beating 7th seed Kevin Milne 10/1. In the semi-final he was up against Austen Rose who came 2nd but couldn't maintain his winning streak and lost 10-5 taking his first bronze medal.

Adrian was straight into the Sabre competition with a combined age group of cat 1 & 2 fencers. Winning 4 fights in his poule gave him 8th seed overall and a win in his first DE bought him up against Duncan Rowlands. He beat Duncan 10/5 but found silver medalist Neil Bowd difficult losing at 10/7 in a close fight. Two Bronze medals and good points in the BVF ranking table. Well done Adrian.
