Great Britain fencer Chris Lawrence wins Gold

Bedford School fencer Chris Lawrence competed as part of the British Under 17 Cadet Sabre Squad at the EuroSabre 2009 Tournament at Meylan, France on 14/15 November. This competition forms part of the European Cadet Circuit which includes events in Hungary, France, Austria, Italy and the UK.

Chris is currently ranked 4th in Great Britain at Under 17 having achieved a 3rd place in the British Under 20 Championships and 3rd in the Under 17 British Selection event in Manchester earlier in the season.

Chris (Bedford Fencing Club) fenced for the Great Britain “A” team with Soji Aiyenuro (Camden Fencing Club), Harry Boteler (Eton College) and Henry Walker (Truro Fencing Club). Twenty-Eight teams participated in the event from France, Belorussia, Hungary, Great Britain, Romania, Belgium and Switzerland.

The Great Britain A team fenced strongly throughout the day and were undefeated in the poule stage. In the semi-finals they defeated the Romanian team 45-42. And in the final the Great Britain Team faced Hungary and put in a very strong performance to win the match 45-31. This is the first time that a Great Britain team has won an U17 European Circuit team event.
